Brief

Four Communications, a B-corp certified marketing agency, approached the We Are Placemaking team, and asked us to provide creative production services for their client, St. Christopher’s Place.

The Place, located just off Oxford Street, is a vibrant quarter, featuring an eclectic mix of boutiques and dining options.

The task was to bring their annual summer campaign, Summerscapes to life, which required designing, producing and installing the décor, as well as curating a six week programme of “art hour” workshops for the public to enjoy for free.

The aim, as with many public realm placemaking projects, was to engage visitors and increase dwell time in the area.

What we did

We Are Placemaking responded to the brief by looking at previous years of the campaign and elevating the look and feel of the schemes installed prior.

For the décor, we created bespoke bunting in cut letter polycarbonate and applied coloured vinyl onto the letters reading “Summerscapes”. The translucent vinyl we used for the colours enabled the daylight to cast the letters across the piazza – doubling up on the decorative effect of the bunting within the space.

For the launch of the campaign, we brought in a Calypso steel drum duo for live entertainment, who attracted further visitors and performed summery tranquil melodies in the piazza for the lunchtime crowds.

We also brought an experiential element to this creative placemaking project by sourcing and managing a series of outdoor workshops. These were open to all visitors, local tenants and workers to drop in during lunchtime for an “art hour”. The theme of the workshops was also summery in nature – from watercolour and candle painting to origami making, and more.
