Brief

The summer months offer universities a great opportunity to showcase their spaces to new visitors in a different light. This year, we collaborated with Imperial College London, a globally renowned institution specialising in science, engineering, business, and medicine, to do just that– transforming the public realm with a range of events as part of their Summer Series activation.

The events – designed to attract local residents and the broader community – included a family zone featuring film screenings, a pop-up bar, a giant chess set, foosball and chess tables, and an additional screen for broadcasting major sports events like the Olympics and Wimbledon.

The aim of this Summer Series activation was not only to increase footfall in the area and create a vibrant space for local residents to enjoy but also to demonstrate the transformative power of placemaking in revitalising urban spaces. By fostering community engagement and drawing diverse audiences, our approach to creative creative placemaking helps businesses and institutions alike to create inviting environments that drive sustained economic growth and enhance the overall appeal of their locations.

What we did

We partnered with Rotate Culture to explore their vision for the series and how it could be realised in each of the designated zones. Together, we developed a site plan that detailed the placement of the screen, as well as the locations for furniture, a marquee, and a welcome desk.

The Summer Series was split into two Zones: Zone 1, the ‘family zone’, had scheduled film screenings taking place twice a day from Thursday – Saturday. Beanbags and deckchairs were laid out, and guests were provided with headphones to enjoy an ultimate outdoor cinema experience with complimentary popcorn.

Zone 2, the ‘sports and leisure zone’, screened the Olympics, Wimbledon and Tour De France as well as providing everyone with outdoor sports games such as foosball, boules lane and giant chess.

We also facilitated a unique Art Car Boot Fair which offered food and beverage, entertainment, and an opportunity to get captured by the photography icon Rankin.

Before and throughout the event, we extended support with logistics and handled event production, contracting our own suppliers for furniture, food & beverage and crewing Event Managers.

Deliverables
