Brief

Following the success of our first skate park production, Cabot Circus, a leading shopping destination in the heart of Bristol, reached out to We Are Placemaking to organise the second edition of this successful, popular event. This free pop-up saw the car park transform into a temporary skate park – inviting skaters to show off their skills, and providing free entertainment for families.

Working with the client’s brief, our mission was to bring the community together through this unique and thrilling event, while increasing dwell time in and around the shopping centre. From beginners’ skateboarding classes and pro tips from experts to competitions and communities hang-outs, there was something for everyone.

What we did

To transform this space, Cabot Circus and We Are Placemaking partnered with Canvas to provide and install different skate obstacle elements in the car park, with some new designs which allowed for every skater to focus on perfecting their skills. In addition to the thrilling set-up, we organised DJ sets to take place in the evenings and during competition times, creating a lively atmosphere for skaters and observers with the eclectic sounds of Dazed Muzic, Alfresco and the emerging Fem Collective.

The skate park event spanned an entire week. So, we curated a line-up of events and activities for all levels of skaters to enjoy. The Canvas competition, Route One beginners’ lessons, Boarding School workshops and Rock Solid Competition made the week one to remember. Liquid Death canned water was also supplied to keep the skaters going!

Safety and security were paramount in this event, as we wanted to make sure that skaters felt at ease throughout the sessions. Our sister agency We Are OPS provided on-site safety at every stage – from installation through to the live stages of the event. Security were also on hand to ensure a safe and welcoming environment.

Overall, this transformation from car park to skate park created a hub of entertainment, energy and excitement for skaters and supporters. With the support of Canvas, Route One, The Boarding School, Rock Solid, Shiner, Liquid Death, Dazed, Alfresco and the Fem Collective, we were able to deliver a fantastic and remarkable event which attracted visitors to Cabot Circus Shopping Centre. The event was a testament to the power of creative placemaking and its unique ability to bring people together to celebrate their passions.
