Brief

We Are Placemaking were asked to create a destination in Westquay South to support F&B through increase footfall and sales. Adding a series of events in the program, our aim was to establish Westquay South as an event and social destination.

We Are Placemaking worked with Hammerson and Westquay to produce the Esplanade Maze in 2018 & 2019. In the latter year we were tasked to increase dwell time within the maze and to create a more developed experience to enhance the 2018 edition.

What we did

As part of our ongoing programme of events at Westquay in Southampton, in Easter 2018 we introduced a giant living Hedgemaze to the outdoor Esplanade space for a month long activation. The Hedgemaze was created using 200 individual living planters, and designed completely bespoke to the space, its unique shape weaving around the line of the old city walls.

To elevate the design in 2019 we installed an urban treehouse space, for pop up activities. The Treehouse also provided a viewing platform for visitors to explore the maze from a different perspective.
