Brief

Victoria BID approached us with the task of creating an installation series around London which would showcase creative placemaking at its best for the King’s Coronation. We worked closely with the team at Victoria BID to help produce the Animal trail, which would consist of six wonderful willow sculptures mounted on wooden plinths, in locations across their footprint within the public realm.

What we did

Following the success of the iconic Corgi Trail for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, We Are Placemaking partnered with the Victoria BID, continuing our relationship and creating a new trail. This time, we worked with acclaimed Manchester artist Cherry Chung. She uses native materials including willow, bark and rushes to make basketry and sculptures. With Cherry, we created six perfect animals for the trail: a badger, squirrel, hare, otter, swan and owl.

Whilst creating the trail, we thought about the materials used, as we know the event industry can lead to unnecessary waste. Therefore, as a sustainable material, we went with willow.

These beautiful sculptures were made by hand and each one was bespoke. They were hired, which means they can be taken to different locations and displayed again, or repurposed to minimise waste. The plinths were made from repurposed scaffolding beams which could be reused. We ensured a high focus on sustainability in the creation of the installations.

Deliverables

Stakeholder Management: liaising with the client and the public ream stakeholders.

Logistics Management: creating a sound logistical plan for the installation and de-rig of the event, and working with multiple suppliers.

Sourcing and management of all suppliers: daily consultation, management and ownership of the supply chain.
