Brief
For Mental Health Awareness Month and in celebration of Chelsea Fringe Festival The Northbank BID wanted to install a sensory garden that could be enjoyed by guests of all ages. With a nod to the Queen’s Jubilee they also wanted to incorporate the Jubilee colours within the design creating a vibrant and colourful setting.
Having produced many other London placemaking projects before, as well as placemaking projects across the UK and further afield, We Are Placemaking team were keen to get involved.
What we did
Working to the brief of creating a Sensory Garden, We Are Placemaking wanted to create a space that would stimulate all of our senses. Situated within the courtyard of St. Martins-In-The-Field we wanted to create a calm and tranquil spot that invited guests to take a moment and relax within the hustle and bustle of the city.
Not only did we want to create a chilled space but we also wanted to encourage guests to take photos and remember as a keepsake. Our hero piece was a greenhouse structure covered in green foliage and decorative items such as woven lampshades. Inside was a wooden seat guests were invited to sit on surrounded by potted plants of various shapes of green and purple.
We also installed decorative mini zen gardens, a selection of comfy furniture such as bean bags and hammocks all surrounded by potted plants and against a backdrop of bubbles throughout the day. It encouraged footfall to the courtyard throughout the week it was in situ and even increased sales for the cafe within it. Once the event some of the plants remained at the charity’s courtyard whilst the other plants were distributed by Letting Grow, a not for profit charity to various schools and community projects.
